Why Handmade Soap is Better Than Commercial Brand "Soap"

The Truth About Your "Soap": Why Handmade is the Real Deal

It might surprise you, but many people today have never actually used real soap. That's right! The bars you often find in stores, labeled as "soap," are often anything but.

My Journey to Real Soap: A Family's Quest for Natural Living

A few years ago, as my husband and I prepared for our first child, we decided to make a conscious effort to create a more natural environment at home. This started with what we consumed and, importantly, what we put on our bodies. When I started scrutinizing the "soaps" readily available in stores, I made a startling discovery: what we'd been using wasn't soap at all!

Instead, these products were concoctions of chemical detergents, harsh hardeners, and synthetic lathering agents. These ingredients are notorious for being irritating and aggressive on the skin. This revelation led me down a rabbit hole of research to uncover what true soap actually consists of. The answer was beautifully simple: oils, liquid, and sodium hydroxide (lye). These fundamental ingredients, when combined correctly, create genuine soap, free from irritating chemicals.

The Unsung Hero: Why Handmade Soap Reigns Supreme

So, beyond being free from harsh chemicals, what else makes handmade soap so remarkable?

 Glycerin: Nature's Moisturizing Powerhouse

One of the most incredible components of handmade soap is Glycerin. This natural humectant works wonders by drawing moisture directly from the air to your skin, providing deep hydration. Sadly, most commercial "soaps" strip out this precious Glycerin during their manufacturing process. In handmade soap, however, Glycerin is a natural byproduct of the soapmaking process, remaining in the bar to keep your skin incredibly soft and moisturized.

Skin-Loving Ingredients You Can Trust

At The Butter and Sage Soaps, we craft our bars with a luxurious blend of skin-nourishing oils and butters, including coconut oil, olive oil, palm oil, and Shea butter. This carefully chosen combination ensures each bar is uniquely moisturizing, soothing, and truly nourishing for your skin.

Addressing the Lye Question: A Myth Debunked

You might be wondering, "What about the lye? Isn't that harsh on the skin?" It's a common and valid concern! While sodium hydroxide (lye) is a strong alkaline substance, rest assured that during the meticulous soap-making process, it undergoes a complete transformation called saponification. This chemical reaction converts the lye and oils into soap and glycerin, meaning there is absolutely no lye left in the finished bar of soap!
